Log Date: 9/18/97 Log Cast: Ku-She, Tance Vokrim, Janyx, Tasha, Barbrook, Gyles, Sabreena, Sandy, Kassidy, Mishalla Log Intro: Much to Tance Vokrim's surprise, he has been recruited by one of the Trainers to give a talk to the new class of recruits down from Shankill Moonbase... and an odd recruitment it was, delivered to Tance while he'd gotten stranded in the Ranges, with the Trainer, obviously a Singer, hailing him on his personal commlink and not bothering to identify herself. Goaded into agreeing to talking to the recruits, sent repeated reminders from the still unidentified Trainer, Tance has swallowed his nervousness, and shows up at the Recruit Lounge at the appointed time.... ---------- You wander into the recruit lounge. Recruit Lounge This expansive room functions as entertainment area, classroom, and meeting place for the Heptite Guild recruits. On one wall is an entertainment complex, and along another is a row of booths. Several comfortable chairs are arranged in rows across the width of the room facing the screen. In addition, several tables dot the floor space. A vivid turquoise stripe, textured in a fine hatched pattern, leads the way through the doorway off to the left, heading to the accommodation wing for recruits. The sun gleams brightly outside the window. At this time of day there is almost always a class scheduled, and a group of people are listening to an instructor at one side of the room. Contents: Tance, standing between the lounge and the classroom. Ku-She, standing by the catering unit. Gyles, sitting on a chair in the lounge. Sabreena, on the floor in the lounge. Looking slightly nervous, squaring his shoulders as he comes into view, Tance Vokrim enters the lounge and casts a brown gaze around the room. Ku-She peruses the selection of meat dishes, and purchases the Kung Pao chicken. Janyx leans back against his couch and quietly watches the activity in the room Ku-She spins the menufax around to display the beverage selections. Tasha glance moves to Tance. Ku-She peruses the selection of drinks, and orders a chocolate milkshake. The older fellow with the greying, rumpled brown hair steps a bit further into the lounge, clears his throat, and says, "'Scuse me. I'm supposed to be talkin' to some recruits here...." Ku-She smiles and carries her meal over to the lounge and takes a seat amongst the recruits. Ku-She walks over to the lounge. Ku-She sits down on a couch in the lounge. Barbrook sits up and becomes attentive to the lecturer. Janyx glances over to Sabreena and grins. He grins even wider as he hears Tance's words. "Over here, sir." Ku-She smiles at the siner just entered and looks attentive while she handles the chopsticks and eats the rice with ease. Ku-She smiles to Sabreena and Janyx as she sips from her chocolate milkshake. As she's not using a straw she's left to wipe of her milk moustache. Tance's gaze sweeps across the faces present, and as Janyx speaks up, the Singer cracks a slightly sheepish lopsided grin, ambling over. The man's clearly nervous and just as clearly trying to hide it, as his gaze takes in the room; it's almost as if he's either never seen it before... or perhaps trying to remember what it looks like. "You _are_ recruits, right?" His voice is gravelly, pitched perhaps slightly higher than is normal for it, another possible sign of nervousness. Janyx grins. "What. we don't have the bulleyes on out forheads? Dang." Janyx What stands before you is not a dwarf, no matter what your eyes might tell you. He may stand only 5'4" in height, and though he may be trying to cultivate a beard, that sandy coloured scruffy thing would never be worn by any proud dwarf, and Janyx is definatly not well fed enough to fit the clothes. Once affecting more of a slouched posture that made him look even smaller then he is, Janyx now stands proud and tall, a strange thing for this young man. Even his eyes have taken on a strange glint to them, an inner fire, an inner steeling that has not been in them for many years. These brown orbs still dance with curosity and emotion however, no matter how brightly the inner fire burns. His unrully blond hair does cover these orbs from time to time, but the errent locks are experatly policed by never idle hands. The last thing noticeable about Janyx as his ears, being just the small side of dumboish. Once more Janyx has taken to detracting from them however, with a ring set at both the top and the bottom of his left ear. Running between these is a silver chain, one bare of any ornimentation however. Blue jeans, slightly worn around the knees, and a jet black shirt, that is what Janyx wears today. He also has on his light blue jacket, and as always the crest of Shankill catering in on it's breast, as Janyx is ever so reluctent to remove it. Slightly more quiet, that is what Janyx is like today. He may be facing the world, but don't expect him to put his best face forwards. Ku-She smiles warmly at the nervous Singer, "That we are, Sir. For better, or for worse." Tasha gives a laugh then grins at Tance, "You've found us." Barbrook chuckles Seated at a distant table in the lounge area, Gyles looks up a moment, looking the slightest bit bemused, but his attention is on the cereal more than it is the rest of the room. The Singer looks relieved -- but whether at the success of his mission, or at the attitude of the young people greeting him, is tough to say. He digs a hand into a pocket of his black vest, pulling forth a battered-looking datapad. This he flicks open a moment, staring hard at something on the screen, before he looks up again and says steadily, "Okay, well. I'm supposed to be here and answer questions. About Singer, uh, stuff." Sabreena grins at the singer and nods, "Aye sir, we be the recruits you seek Barbrook smiles "The Med before you told use to ask about Morning Song. What is it? Ku-She's ears perk up and she looks up, waiting for the ISnger's answer, having missed the earlier Med lecture. Evidently, the man is still restless, for he paces a bit and mutters under his breath, before turning to you all, jabbing a forefinger at you and saying gruffly, "First off, I ain't no teacher usually. They offered to pay me. So I ain't exactly ready to an--" Barbrook's question comes right in the middle of this, and he blinks twice, before saying, "Morning song...?" Janyx blinks as he watches Tance's reaction. Sandy walks with muffled steps from the accommodations. Sandy has arrived. Barbrook looks startaled, "yes, morning song.. Sandy slips in near the back, hoping nobody notices his lateness. Tasha chuckles softly, "I've been told about it, but I'd like to hear a second opinion." Sabreena nods to Janyx and settles in to listen. soon falling asleep on Janyx's shoulder, mayhap she's had a few restless nights Ku-She jumps slightly as her wrist unit beeps and then sighs and makes her way out. Ku-She gets up from the couch. Ku-She follows the grey stripe along the corridor. Ku-She has left. Sandy walks over to the lounge. Janyx chuckles as he looks down at Sabreena, ears perked to listen in to Tance. The Singer blows out a breath, shoving a hand through his grey-streaked dark hair, and he begins to pace again. "Morning song, huh?" he mutters, mostly to himself. "Would hafta ask about that... huh." He looks up again, looking slightly sheepish once more, but facing everyone. "Well, it's like this, see. The crystal... wakes up, in the morning, when the sun hits it. Responding to temperature. Makes a helluva racket. And, uh, well, if you're out there, you get... caught in it." Janyx nods slightly. "That's it? The big deal?" Tasha shakes her head toward Sandy then smiles, "Just started." Tasha glances toward Tance then asks, "In what way are you 'caught'? Sandy grins at Tasha. "Good." Barbrook looks a bit confused by the answer. Tasha waits for Sandy to finish the answer on what way you are 'caught' in the morning song. She listens with a half smile. Tance swings round to look at Janyx, and by his commentary, looks almost amused now. The man's demeanor eases a bit; he cracks another lopsided grin, his eyebrows going up. Brown eyes flick briefly to Tasha, acknowledging her, before he looks back to Janyx and says archly, "The big deal is sex, kid. Morning song grabs you like that. You got a partner cutting with you, better be somebody you don't mind takin' a tumble with, 'cause you will." Barbrook blushes and chuckles at the same time. Barbrook wrist watch beeps and he is summond out of the room, Janyx goes a deep red and shuts his mouth quickly. Gods know he isn't going to be speaking for a bit. Barbrook waves, "i have to be going, i will be back in a few minutes Barbrook gets up from the couch. Barbrook walks into the accommodation area for recruits. Barbrook has left. Though Tasha's face turns slightly pink she still winks at Tance, "So this is one of the good things of being a singer then?" Sandy just sort of..blinks. Gyles finishes his cereal and pushes the tray away. He leans back lazily in his chair, fingers knitted across his belly, watching the old singer curiously. The man is actually coherent. Smirking a trifle, still pacing as though trying to work off his nervousness, the Singer looks back to Tasha. Now _he_ blushes, just a hint, but the grin remains as he says, "It don't hurt much, no. If it bothers yah, better not go out in the mornin'. Or else just be ready to deal." Barbrook walks with muffled steps from the accommodations. Barbrook has arrived. Barbrook wanders back in and walks to the couch again. Barbrook tramps over to the lounge. Barbrook sits down on a couch in the lounge. Barbrook looks around, "did i miss anything? The Singer looks around again, taking in the range of expressions, and he shifts from foot to foot. "So. Next question?" Tasha smiles slightly then leans back. Barbrook says "what is it like in the ranges?" The Singer looks round to Barbrook, at that. Perhaps the question's a bit general for him, for the man's brow crinkles a bit. "Like, how?" Barbrook smiles, "i hear that the terrain is difficult in places Barbrook says "and does it get lonly out there?" The Singer laughs, roughly. "Difficult? Yeah... yeah, kid, it is. Some places. Depends on where you fly. Nooks and crannies and places where you can karkin' well break a leg." The second question gives the man some pause, though, and the grin flickers down to a suspiciously more plaintive expression, at least for a moment. But he affirms, "Yeah. Gets lonely, too." Tasha tilts her head, studying the singer, "Do you like singing crystal?" The Singer seems thrown by _that_ question, too, but he turns to Tasha, his weathered face flickering with a clear tangle of emotion on the matter for a second or two. He begins awkwardly, "I..." Then he sucks in a breath and continues, "Yeah. Now I do." Implying, perhaps, that he hadn't before? Sandy asks, "What would you say is the best part about Singing?" Tasha studies Tance then falls silent, thinking perhaps her questions may bother him. Tance walks over to the lounge. Tance sits down on a chair in the lounge. Claiming a chair, the Singer is silent a moment, his hands fidgeting with one another; work-worn hands, those, nicked with tiny white scars here and there over weathered skin and muscle. "What do I like about it..." he echoes, as if asking himself that very question. Then he snaps back to paying attention to those before him, and says after a moment, "It's... best, when I got Jade with me. She talks to me. Sings with me. Helps me remember. Otherwise... it's... a job, a karkin' hell of a job, that breaks your bones, breaks your sled, breaks your cutter, and breaks your head." He pauses. Then finishes, "And it's real lonely, by yourself." Kassidy walks in from the lift area. Kassidy has arrived. Kassidy walks in, glancing around then walks toward the catering unit. Sandy nods slowly. "I see," he murmurs. Tasha nods in understanding. Kassidy walks over to the catering unit. Janyx finally manages to force the last of the blush off his face. "Memory loss... how bad can it get?" Barbrook smiles, "have you gone out with recruits before, Looking hopeful. Kassidy pauses in looking over the menu to glance toward the lounge, listening to the conversation. Barbrook says "do any singers go out with recruits?" Tance looks around to Janyx and says bluntly, "I ain't gonna remember bein' up here by tomorrow night, probably. Won't remember none of you." To Barbrook, he shakes his head. "Nah, kid. Not unless you get adapted to Singer, then we'd shepherd yah. Can't let you out there till you adapt." Ku-She walks with muffled steps from the accommodations. Ku-She has arrived. Tasha asks softly, "Is there a way to ...help retain your memory? Ku-She come sin, muttering to herself and retakes her seat in the lounge. Ku-She walks over to the lounge. Ku-She sits down on a couch in the lounge. Kassidy moves away from the catering unit, listening to the class as she leans against a wall and watches. Tance fishes a hand into his pocket again, producing the small battered datapad. "This helps... put everything in it. Just gotta remember to check it." He smirks. "Hells, girlie, half the time I can't frekkin' remember where my quarters are. Anything important.... record it somewhere." His expression turns strangely plaintive again. "And don't tell your room computer to delete stuff unless you _really_ mean it." Mishalla walks with muffled steps from the accommodations. Mishalla has arrived. Tasha nods then looks down, becoming lost in her thoughts for a moment. Mishalla quietly slips in, and finds a spot to sit. Mishalla strolls over to the lounge. Mishalla sits down on the floor in the lounge. As the group grows larger around him, the Singer blinks and looks unsettled a moment or two. He then shifts himself on the chair he's claimed, and asks again, "You kids wanna know anything else?" Janyx slowly shakes his head. "Not I." Ku-She smiles and gives a wave to Mishalla. Tasha shakes her head, "I have no more." Barbrook smiles, "i have none." Mishalla waves to Ku-She, and settles in, "Okay, uh, well..." The man glances around to some of the newcomers -- Mishalla, and others who haven't spoken; his brown gaze flits across the quiet Gyles as well. "Any of you kids?" Sandy shakes his head. "None here, sir." Mishalla blinks as the question is asked, and frowns. "Not really... I manages to ask a Singer most of mine when I came down..." she says in her soft voice. Gyles smiles slightly and shakes his head, unsurprised to be classed in with the recruits. Ku-She uh, "Well, I'm sorry I missed the earlier part. I'm sure if I have any more questions, I'll find someone to ask." Kassidy grins toward Gyles then turns and starts toward the lifts, humming softly to herself. The Singer rises, then, nodding, putting the datapad away. "Okay... well. That's it, then." Trying to look 'teacherly', or at the very least like he has the slightest clue what he's doing, he gives the lot of you a faint grin again, says apologetically, "If I don't remember yah, don't take it personal, 'kay?", and turns to wander out.
