Milleniuth's young rider has coaxed the girl out of the crowded living cavern, and is hoping to escort her off to the secluded quiet of the Records Room... but it's not Records study E'rian has in mind. Little does E'rian know that his brother K'star is already in there, as well as another surprise.... ---------- You walk down the short tunnel and out into the bowl. Emlyn comes out of the short tunnel from the living cavern. Emlyn has arrived. Pleiath reluctantly rises from lying in her dam's shadow. She, too, checks out Mehlani, though she's never shown an interest in the young lady before. Herath finds her interesting, after all. With E'rian's jacket draped about her slender shoulders, and E'rian himself smilingly escorting her, Mehlani looks absently up to gold Herath. She smiles distractedly at the dragon, before E'rian escorts her into the Records Room. You walk into the records cavern, leaving the bowl behind. Woven of cut river reeds that have been dyed in shades of green, gold, bronze, black, white, and red, with a stripe of Dragonhealer purple winding its way across the top, this basket is filled to the brim with warm sand and warmer shells of the fire-lizard egg variety. The wild colors of the basket pale beside those of its contents. Funny; no dam seems to be guarding this clutch, for all that they look to be just hard enough to hatch any minute now. In fact... did one of those eggs just rock? Rolling forth from the vividly red, black, and white shell that has encased her for all of her life until this moment, this lithe green hatchling with streaks of a yellow so pale as to be nearly golden streaming over her neck and wingsails does not make a very decorous entrance. Yet there can be no doubt that she retains a certain poise that would be more expected of a queen. Her conformation is graceful and smooth, promising that she will be a flawless beauty once she comes of age; her gait, even at her first step, is sinuous and very nearly sensual. This hatchling will indubitably be one who shall use her loveliness as men use weapons, manipulating her way into even the hardest of hearts. She turns her faceted carmine eyes upon you and utters a plaintive dulcet creel... and you are apt to be charmed despite yourself, for even the most cautious would find it difficult to resist this intelligent and cunning lady. 'Befuddled' would be a good word to describe this rotund little blue. 'Ineffectual' might be another. Poor little guy; from the second he bumbles out of his egg, he seems destined to be a sidekick, doing good only by sheerest chance and missing out on the action more often than not. When he *does* manage to latch on to whatever sort of event might be happening, you can tell that he'll do more harm than good simply by being present; he's just that kind of 'lizard. His headknobs and the area around them are crowned by a most peculiar cap of silvering grey; the rest of him has hints of this color, though his feet are so dark as to be nearly black. One might almost swear that he is wearing shoes. With a tentative bugle that alarms him to the point where he jumps into the air in surprise, the pudgy little 'lizard waddles his way forth to take his place in the world... and with a courageous humanthing who might have enough compassion to guide him. This little brown squeaks and chitters rather playfully as he tumbles from his egg and hops about the cot. Quite agile for one so newly arrived, he dances about, surrying here and there and looking for a bite to eat. As he moves, his dark brown hide dries into a brushed brown, almost giving him the appearance of having a coat of hair over his entire body. Everywhere, that is, except on his chest, shoulders and wings, which are a velvety red-brown that is shot through with gold highlights. With a chirp and squawk, he scampers up an arm, over a shoulder and back down again, silly as a wherry. But suddenly he stops, and lets out a belch to stop Belior in its orbit. The astonished look on his face can only be described as one that a child might make when given a sour food, like a bad date. Stepping lithely from her shell, this little green has all the poise and finesse of a gold dragon. She surveys the world about her with a discriminating eye, sizing it up as if it were an audience she had to entertain. Her silky green hide is wrought with traceries of gold and yellow in small repeating patterns that look, themselves, a bit like little dragons. Several measured paces forward, and she begins to croon in a sultry sort of way. But something in the song is odd... familliar, yet distorted. When the serenade is done, she starts to wander about, but suddenly, for some odd reason she squawks loudly, her finished demeanor shattered. Ducking behind the closest object, her cries continue until silenced be a soothing hand in a beat-up brown fedora. With the salt-and-pepper markings of iron grey and silvering white along this dignified navy blue hatchling's chin, one might almost think that some mischievous soul has somehow gotten a tiny fake beard attached to him. Yet the markings are natural, and serve to make his appearance comically like that of an aging man who still possesses a remarkable store of serenity and poise. The cap of nearly black hide atop his head only makes this image stronger. His vermillion eyes, when calmed, seem to hold a vast store of knowledge that contrasts sharply with his young age; there can be no doubt that he will always be sharply intelligent, especially for a blue. He opens his mouth to call out his hunger, and the sound that emerges is deep, but musical, with a melodious accent all its own. The top of the Forbidden Secret Ark Egg seems almost to explode, flying back from the rest of it with an astonishing force. Not waisting a moment, a pale, wraithlike green erupts from the opening she has made with a wail of ghostly wrath at the ignonimy of her birth. Her hide is wrapped in mists of opaque white and candleflame yellow, nearly obliterating the sickly greens beneath; her movements are unbelievably quick and graceful, but her manner has no grace at all. She is one who will be vicious beyond belief when proddy, and contain a cruel streak at the best of times; any who disturb her will face her anger, and for all that she is only a fire-lizard, it will not pay to underestimate the power of her rage. Even now may it be seen in the smoldering garnet of her eyes, which slowly turn upon you as though wondering whether you will become pet... or prey. These hatchlings of Kassima's green Kitrine and Kindre's bronze Flyrk all look to you with pleading, begging, hungry little crimson eyes. Aaaaaw! E'rian pauses just inside the door, long enough to glance back at his green--who is, it might be noted, keeping a nice, safe distance from Veyath. "This is much better," he says, listening to the quiet for a moment. Or rather... the mostly-quiet. There's a faint rustling behind one of the Records stacks, but it really isn't enough to cause notice. The basket of eggs, however, *is* enough to cause notice... especially when they start cracking. "Uh-oh...?" Mehlani blinkblinks dewily up at E'rian again, her steps just a trifle unsteady, and her hand gripping his arm all unknowing. As he trails startledly off, however, she follows his hazel gaze, and then.... stares. "Oh my," she murmurs tinily. E'rian, wise lad that he is, keeps an exceptionally healthy distance from those eggs. Peculiarly, there's a bowl of meat sitting... hmm. Not far from where 'Lani is standing, actually. Whoever could have left that there? "'Lani?" he asks, his voice a bit higher-pitched than usual. "I think they like you...." Better you than me, babe. As the hatchlings start converging on her, Mehlani blinks several times, noticeably startled, and she flashes her wide-eyed gaze back and forth between the horde of hatchlings and the young green rider. "What...? Oh... oh dear... E'rian, I... I can't possibly.... oh my...." Pheloni peers down a bookshelf at the tiny young brood of peeping 'lizards and chirples a greeting to them. His voice is almost...well...mocking as he watches the Impressions. The hatchlings do indeed converge on Mehlani, their chirps and cheeplings ranging from the pitiful to the demanding. "I think you'd best," Eyr warns. "Some of those critters don't look like they'll take no for an answer. And they *are* pretty cute." That doesn't entice him from his not-quite-hiding place far away from the basket, however. Mehlani, looking rather perplexed as E'rian actually appears to have left her side, blinks several times, and then looks limpidly down at the hatchlings. A heart tenderly moved by all animals and winged creatures beats in her young breast, and at the moment, for some strange reason, her sentiments appear to be even sharper than usual. A soft "ohhhhhhh" of compassion escapes her; she can hardly let the little things go hungry. She scoops up the bowl of meat and then sinks down to the floor, her skirt puddling out in blue cloth around her. Mehlani seems to think of something, however. She lifts her liquid gaze up to E'rian and says distractedly, "Someone... should be told, surely they'd want to know if the clutch is hatching....? Oh," she adds, as baby fire lizards start clambering up into her lap. Quite gratefully, the six young hatchlings of Kitrine and Flyrk rush forward to take their shares of the meat... and one by one, look up to meet Mehlani's eyes with their own, whirling blue with absolute love and trust for this kindhearted young human. E'rian edges closer, perhaps feeling a bit guilty for abandoning 'Lani... but he still maintains a healthy distance until the last of the 'lizards have Impressed. "I think it's too late," he whispers, perhaps a touch awed despite himself at the sight of hatching 'lizards. It likely reminds him of the Hatching when Milleniuth claimed him at Benden, now Turns ago. Mehlani swallows hard, looking noticeably more dazed as the impact of six tiny 'lizard minds starts making itself felt on her already slightly addled thoughts. As the miniature horde gobbles down the tidbits offered by Mehlani's fingers, some shyly, some boldly, all with voracious hunger, the girl's expression turns positively melting, and she looks up to E'rian to proclaim, moved, "They're... so _small_....!" Pheloni(#13795IMVpq) Hued a brilliant azure, this sprite firelizard more often than not finds himself in trouble, or causing it. A true free spirit in his own mind, he is quite the mischievious young thing. E'rian kneels down beside 'Lani, able to smile at the girl and her 'lizards now that there's no longer a danger. "Aye, they are," he agrees. "And I don't believe I've ever seen a fairer sight than you caring for these little ones. It makes me want to...." He trails off, glancing again at the 'lizards without finishing his sentence. A chorus of peeps sounds out in answer to Mehlani's voice, and she keeps feeding the hungry little ones, encouraging the shyer of the two blues, trying to separate two of the greens as they jockey for the most advantageous spot on her lap. The look with which Mehlani regards E'rian now is no less melting than the one with which she's regarding her sudden new fair, and she breathes to him tenderly, "You're always so sweet, E'rian...." "Not as sweet as you," E'rian repeats with a warm smile. After a moment's hesitation, he follows through on his impulse... leaning over to kiss 'Lani much as he did when Milleniuth was proddy before. "Just as I remembered," he remarks once the kiss is broken, his smile even broader and warmer somehow. "Sweeter than any rose by far. You're truly something else, Mehlani." 'Lani sways there where she sits, actually distracted enough from the tangle of hatchlings in her lap that she pauses in her feeding efforts; this doesn't stop the brown and the bolder of the blues and greens from climbing right into the bowl and arguing over the last of the scraps. Mehlani herself just gazes liquidly at E'rian, her eyes very wide, her cheeks beginning to pinken. E'rian gives another quiet, deep-throated chuckle, brushing his fingers lightly along 'Lani's cheek. "Been a time since I've last kissed a girl speechless," he teases--then turns, frowning, as a loud bugle is heard from outside. "Milleniuth," he sighs. "She's gotten into some kind of an argument with Indyth. Shells and fardles, I hate to leave you... but I must. Will I see you again some other day, Mehlani, light of my soul?" "Indyth....?" Mehlani echoes, looking as though she's having a hard time following E'rian's change in topics. Between that and the fire lizards still squirming in her lap, she gives the slightest of confused frowns, but then bobs her head to the young green rider. "Yes.... of course...." With another sigh, Eyr dips his head to give 'Lani another kiss, though this time a quick one. "Then I'll see you soon--and that's a promise," he states, getting to his feet with a wink and then dashing out towards the Bowl. From that corner the rustling was coming from earlier, a fedora-wearing hat slowly peeks out, not looking at all pleased. Nevertheless, Kes manages to school his expression into a more bland one before he raises his voice to call, "'Lani? Is that you?" Oh, yeah. Like he doesn't know. E'rian's absence leaving her feeling... odd (but then, she's felt odd all day), Mehlani frowns consideringly to herself, one hand lifted to her head, the other moving to try to soothe the fair in her lap now that they appear to have eaten their fill. Or at least, one hopes they have, for the three braver ones have cleared out the bowl, and are falling asleep in a knot of brown, blue, and green. But at the sound of Kes's call, the girl looks up, blinking disorientedly at yet another new thing to try to sort out. "Kes," she blurts. "That'd be me," Kes agrees, his own smile, like his fedora, rather crooked. "Hey. I see you've picked up some new 'lizards...?" Yes, Kes, good idea: keep the topic a nice and safe one at first. Wouldn't want to startle the girl. Mehlani blinks owlishly, melting warmth warring with confusion on her dainty features. "Yes," she agrees after a moment, sounding as if it took her a bit of thought to settle on the word. "They were... just here! Do, do you know whose clutch they are, I-I-I don't want anyone to be mad.... they were all hatching... and hungry... and... they're so..." She trails off, her gaze dipping to the fair again. They appear to be all dozing off, in a slow stream of fire lizard yawns, curlings of tails about bodies, and shutting of multiple sets of eyelids. 'Lani's expression softens, almost foolishly, suggesting something's not quite right behind her limpid blue eyes. "I think Kassi misplaced a clutch recently," K'star says slowly. "She was wondering where it had gotten to. I was planning on telling her about the basket being in here when I finished up, but there's little point now. I sincerely doubt *she'd* mind. She's got enough 'lizards to repopulate the Weyr, or nearly." Flashing that trademark grin of his briefly, he settles down to sit cross-legged on the floor beside 'Lani. "They're adorable. Voracious, but adorable. Listen... I have to say...." He pauses, and then rushes ahead, "I saw what E'rian did just now. 'Twasn't very chivalrous of him to up and kiss you with nay warning--are you all right?" His brogue has thickened a bit, in his concern for the girl's welfare. Mehlani's gaze lifts to take in K'star as he sits down beside her, and that strange softness is still present in her face. Then her brows draw together in bemusement, first at Kes's abrupt transition to speaking of his brother, and then to his final question. Her hand returns to her brow, and she murmurs, "E'rian... asked me that, too... I... I feel a little odd..." The confession drifts out of her in a gentle tone, as her gaze settles on the young brown rider, and the scar across his chin. And she concludes, perhaps in self-contradiction, "I'm fine..." Pheloni leaves the records cavern. Pheloni has left. K'star regards Mehlani levelly under the brim of his fedora. "I just want to make sure that Eyr didn't upset you. If he did... well, I promise you, he'd regret it." Taking in her new outfit at last, the young brownrider blinks in surprise. "'Lani! I never knew you liked skirts... shards, they suit you. Might be a bit impractical for reading Records in winter in, though." "Oh, no, he was very sweet," Mehlani answers earnestly. Then, her head tilting a little, her gaze still on Kes's face, she goes on dreamily, "You're both... always very sweet to me! Good friends...." Her brow crinkles a little, though. "I hope Indyth is not too angry at Milleniuth. He said they were arguing..." And then, without much of a pause, she smiles sweetly, utterly unconsciously, and explains, "Faarla sent the skirt.... I had to try it on!" K'star's breath catches a bit in his throat at that sweet smile from 'Lani, and he clears said throat a bit awkwardly. "Well, then... if you don't mind...." Funny. The young man almost looks jealous, an emotion that doesn't rest very well on his handsome features. "I hope I'm always a good friend to you, 'Lani. Oh, here--I got you something, by the by. Just a little trinket I picked up at Smithcraft while running an errand, but I thought you might like it." He draws a peculiar tangle of metal rings from his pocket. "'Tis a puzzle, you see. When it's solved, they'll all line up in a row, and you can wear 'em as a set of bracelets or whatever you like. I figured you're clever enough for puzzles like this. I confess, they tend to confuse me." With a faint smile quirking his mouth upward, he notes quietly, "It looks magnificent. Faarla has good taste in gifts." Mehlani ohs, her eyes widening at the gift. Another vivid smile warms her face, and she breathes, "I love puzzles...!" She accepts the shiny tangle in awe, but once she's holding it, she gives it only a passing glance before her gaze returns to the brown rider. "Thank you, twice," she goes on. And then she trails off again, still staring dewily Keswards, her lips slightly parted. K'star's grin is as bright as the sun as 'Lani expresses pleasure with the gift. "I thought you might... and I'm glad I wasn't wrong," he says. Swallowing, he gazes into her eyes and murmurs a slightly husky, "You're welcome, twice." Then, before he can think better of it, he bends to touch his lips to hers in a kiss more along the lines of warm and brotherly than that bestowed by E'rian... for the first second or two, anyway. He abruptly turns his head, flushing. "I'm sorry," he mutters, and heaves a sigh. "I'm no better than Eyr, after all." Mehlani gasps softly as she's kissed for the third time in only a handful of minutes; kissed, she sways again where she sits, and has to fumble to support herself by pressing a palm to the floor. But then, as Kes jerks his gaze away, she does something startling with that same hand -- she lifts it round to his far cheek, to turn his face back to her. "Handsome," she whispers, oddly dreamily. "You have such fine eyes, Kes..." Her own are turning rather noticeably vacant. K'star's eyes widen, and he involuntarily raises one hand to rest it lightly atop Mehlani's. "I... you really think that I'm handsome?" he asks, sounding downright stunned. It had never occured to him, apparently, that 'Lani might admire *him* rather than vice-versa. "Oh, 'Lani. You're too generous--but that's part of what makes you such a wonderful lady." However, it has surely occured to him even through his delighted daze that this behavior just isn't *normal* for Mehlani, and his brow crinkles up in confusion. 'Lani slowly bobs her head, her consciousness full of the sense of Kes's cheek beneath her hand, his fingers atop it, and the cadences of his voice falling upon her ears. She could agree to _anything_ that voice is telling her, as long as it keeps speaking to her. "Mmmhmm-hmm," she agrees languidly. Her face is full of a growing adoration; if she were a fire lizard, her eyes would be whirling. K'star seems confused, albeit not displeased, by this new attitude of Mehlani's... and who wouldn't be? But he's a man of honor, and wouldn't misuse the power of the Voice. Instead, he simply says, "I could not be half so handsome in your eyes as you are lovely in mine," and bends his head to kiss her again. With a bit less hesitance this time, it might be added. Mehlani appears to have absolutely no objections to K'star kissing her again; in fact, awkwardly, she even seems to be trying to respond in kind. But she also starts to sway unsteadily. K'star reluctantly pulls away from 'Lani as she starts to sway, slipping an arm around her waist. "Careful," he cautions. "You don't seem very steady, of a sudden... and nay wonder, with all of these 'lizards and all. Mayhaps you should head in for the night?" Mehlani blinks, slumping sideways into Kes's support, then peering down anxiously at the fair snoozing in her lap. The brown stirs restlessly; so does one of the greens. "I feel strange," she blurts. Kes frowns with definite concern. "Or maybe the infirmary would be a better idea. Here--I'll help you up, if you will, and the 'lizards too if they won't object." Something suddenly occurs to him, and he blinks. "'Lani, how old is Rianet?" The sight of the baby 'lizards seems to stir something in Mehlani's memory -- and she doesn't seem to grasp Kes's question, at least not for a moment or two. Then, her brow delicately furrowed, she muses, "Oh... about a Turn, I think... yes... I wonder if she might be proddy. I haven't seen her, not all day... but I think this is how Father must feel..." She abruptly giggles, fatuously. "Father will have kittens when he hears I have three more greens, just like him!" And in yet another topic shift, she returns a liquid gaze to K'star and concludes, "You really have marvelous eyes..." "She's proddy," Kes confirms. "At least, I think so. Indyth mentioned that there was a proddy green flickering about that he thought he recognized--you know how bad his memory is--but he didn't specify, so I wasn't sure...." A flush stains his cheeks at this compliment from 'Lani. "Well, I can't take credit for 'em. They're a gift from my mother, y'see." With another grin even more crooked than usual, he starts to stand. "If that's it, maybe Pierron has something that could help. 'Tany rate, sitting here on the cold floor probably won't." "Mhmm-hmmm," agrees 'Lani dreamingly, her gaze wavering from Kes Of The Marvelous Eyes back down to her newly acquired fair. Having forgotten Eyr's jacket still draped along her shoulders, she starts gently lifting hatchlings to nestle them propped on her arm, right against her chest, coaxing each to get a good grip on her before bringing up the next. Several of the hatchlings chirr sleepily, in transit. The brown finally goes on 'Lani's left shoulder, and the bigger of the blues on her right. All the while, Mehlani hums sweetly, before finally looking again up at the young rider. "I think I can get up now..." K'star eyes the jacket, certainly recognizing it, but decides not to make a comment. "In that case, m'lady, may I escort you to your quarters?" he asks, smiling. "Ah... mayhaps through the infirmary? The commotion in the Cavern would probably wake the 'lizards." With a sort of unpracticed grace, 'Lani daintily takes Kes's hand, and with his aid, rises very carefully to her feet. She crinkles her nose slightly as the hatchlings who've had to occupy her shoulders rouse enough to sink their claws into Eyr's jacket, threatening to dislodge it, and she has to let go of Kes's hand to grasp the jacket by the collar to keep it in place. "A good idea," breathes the girl. "You're so very clever, Kes!" Mehlani, with that, beams meltingly at the young rider and turns to wander off, humming as she goes, more floating than walking from the look of her. [And shortly....] You head towards the corridor to the weyrfolk quarters. Dormitories(#1277RA$) Contents: Shiva Lost and Found Cabinet (OOC) Obvious exits: Inner Cavern At the door of the dormitories, Mehlani turns to smile radiantly up at her escort, apparently oblivious to the possibility that anybody might actually be _in_ the dorm. "Thank you, K'star," she breathes to him. K'star glances anxiously about, since his mind is a *bit* less muddled than 'Lani's... but only a bit. Seeing no one at the moment, he sighs faintly in relief and gives Mehlani a smile only a degree or two less bright than her own. "Always welcome, Mehlani," he murmurs back. "Always welcome." Actually _sighing_ dreamily, looking alarmingly like the lasses rumored to worship her father, Mehlani gives Kes another warm shy smile, and then turns to wander off for her cot. Once there, humming again, she gently places hatchlings on the bed until she can place Eyr's jacket over her press and then curl up amidst her sated fair. The moment she's lying down her eyes begin to drift closed, but until it does, her gaze lingers on K'star's tall young form, a smile softening her face. K'star waits until 'Lani seems settled in and no longer wavering, watching her with a certain light in those hazel eyes of his. On impulse, he blows her a quick kiss before smiling at her with more warmth, should she but realize it, than friendship could account for... and then, finally, he ducks back out of the room with some reluctance. "G'night, 'Lani," his voice can be heard to call softly behind him. [End log.]
