Kevlan Sharr, informed by all of the Sorters familiar with him that his crystal resonance is bright enough to be seen from orbit, retires to his quarters for a string of sessions with the radiant tank. After his third or fourth time soaking, he receives an unexpected visitor.... You paged Bernadette with 'As you glance at the door, the privacy light flicks from red to green.'. From afar, Bernadette walks hesitantly down the hall and stops outside Kevlan's door, staring at it. You paged Bernadette with 'The soundproof walls make it impossible to hear anything within, but clearly, he _must_ be in there, if the privacy light has just flipped...'. You hear a soft chime and an electronic voice announces that Bernadette is in Violet Quadrant and is knocking on Kevlan's Suite. You step out into the hallway. Bernadette blinks and moves her eyes up from Kevlan's chest to his face as he steps out. She blinks again. Kevlan pokes his head out the door. "Eh... oh... Berni... " His eyes widen, as he looks you up and down. "Star-Lady! Honey, what happened to you?" Bernadette blinkblinks again and looks on the verge of crying. Bernadette mumbles without moving her jaw, "It...it's been a bad day..." Kevlan ohs, awkwardly, and very gently steps over, grasping your shoulders. "Aw, honey... you look a wreck... ain't you gone t' see th' medics yet?" Bernadette shakes her head and mutters "I doan wanna..." She looks down at her feet, and cradles her hand to her chest. Bernadette looks up at Kevlan with big, sad eyes, looking forlorn and says "I don't know why I'm bothering you....Sorry..." and turns toward her door down the hall. Kevlan looks down at you, his eyes darkened with concern. He seems a lot more alert than when you last saw him; from the sheen of his skin, not to mention that he's clad in nothing but a thick terrycloth robe, he's evidently just stepped out of a radiant tank. He tells you gently, "You're hurt, honey... you gotta go see th' medics. Hey hey, now... you ain't botherin' me none. You want Ah should come with you?" Bernadette turns back and looks at Kevlan, her eyes traveling from his face to his feet and back. "You're not properly attired to escort me," and she twitches her bruised lips into a pseudo-smile, althoug she still looks sad. Kevlan smiles sheepishly down at himself, and says seriously, "It'll jes' take me a minute t' git changed. You wanna come in and sit down? You look like you need t'." Bernadette hesitates for a second and looks past Kevlan at his door before returning her eyes to Kevlan. "Well......ok." Bernadette shuffles towards Kevlan, weaving a bit unsteadily. Kevlan smiles tenderly, and gingerly reaches to let you lean on him, if you wish it...? "You jes' come right on in here, now, honey, an' sit down... " The door slides open, and you step inside. Bernadette steps in from the hall. Kevlan helps you in gently, and escorts you to the chair by his desk. "Here now, hon, you jes' set yourself down right here, an' Ah'll git on some clothes an' take you right down an' git fixed up, 'kay?" Bernadette obediently sits in the chair and nods, cradling her hand. Kevlan looks down at you earnestly for a moment, and then vanishes off towards his bathing chamber, rummaging around in the closets between the main room and the bathing room. Bernadette leans her head back and closes her eyes. Kevlan disappears into the bathing room... Bernadette mutters louad enough to be heard in the bathing room "Aren't you going to ask me what happened?" Kevlan reemerges, now clad in casual clothes. He comes over to you, and looks down at you solemnly. "Ah figger gittin' you fixed up right's th' important thing, hon... 'less you need t' talk?" Kevlan kneels down before the chair, watching you quietly. Bernadette picks her head up and opens her eyes to look at Kevlan. "Elissa and I had...um, a disagreement," she states. Bernadette blinks and watches Kevlan's reaction to her understatement. Kevlan blinks, and says hesitantly, "That musta been some disagreement... " He looks at you concernedly, noting the way you're holding your jaw, as well as your ruined hand. "Look, honey, you don't hafta say much about it right now, Ah think we oughtta git you fixed up, 'kay?" Bernadette draws her brows together and says "She didn't do this to my hand...my cutter did. She accused me of jumping her claim." Kevlan stands, and offers you an arm to lean on. His blue eyes are very level and earenst for once, and as you mumble on, those eyes widen. "You ain't no claimjumper, Berni!" Bernadette uses her good hand to pull herself up on your arm and mutters "I know that and you know that, but obviously she didn't know that." She pauses then continues, "Anyway, I think we've cleared the air." Kevlan frowns softly, scrutinizing you with clear worry. He considers; then, evidently deciding he shouldn't press the topic, he suggests gently, "Let's git you down t' th' doctors. C'mon now." Bernadette sighs and nods, allowing herself to be led, and mumbles about how all this is going to make it hard to fill her special order. You step out into the hallway. [Out in the quadrant... ] Bernadette steps out of Kevlan's rooms. Kevlan lets you hang on to him as he reaches over with his free hand to thumb his door closed. Kevlan says earnestly, "Ah guess you cain't sing all that good with your jaw like that." He walks slowly so as not to outpace you with his longer stride. You walk down the hall toward the lifts. Bernadette enters the hallway. Bernadette shakes her head. "I can sing enough to set my cutter, but it hurts like crazy." Bernadette lets go of your arm and gingerly touches her jaw, wincing. You say "Then you shouldn't sing none, till it gits healed up..." Kevlan reaches over and thumbs open the lift, and waits for you to precede him. Bernadette blinks and looks at Kevlan incredulously. "I have to." Bernadette steps in with a slight nod. You step onto the lift. Bernadette leans heavily against the wall of the lift. Kevlan anyways, and asks you, "Do you? Ah mean... we're gonna go offworld soon... do you need th' credits..?" He suddenly laughs, then, softly. "But that ain't it, is it?" The lift doors slide shut and you feel the slight *pop* of air pressure changes. A soft chime sounds and a computer-generated voice announces: "Twelfth Level (Infirmary)." The doors *whoosh* open. You say "Here we go now. Let's see if we c'n find you a doctor, hon..." Bernadette twitches her lips into a smile at Kevlan. "No, I don't need the credits...I just can't seem to....stay away...." Her eyes glaze a bit as her mind wanders. Kevlan escorts you out, and smiles a little, a glimmer of sympathy in his eyes. At your destination, you step off the quiet lift. Bernadette emerges from the efficient lift. You say "It really... gits to you, don't it? You seen it." You say "Or... heh... heard it." Bernadette shifts her eyes to Kevlan and simply looks at him with her dazed expression. Kevlan says softly, looking down at you, "You been there now, ain't you...? Out in th' Ranges, when th' sun's comin' up an' th' rocks're singin', like the Lady's own voice... " He smiles gently. "Ah cain't stay 'way neither. Prob'ly why ever'body keeps tellin' me they c'n see mah resonance from orbit." Bernadette twitches her lips again in a smile and nods mutely, staring at nothing in particular for a moment then looks at Kevlan again, her eyes a glassy and says "I have to go back..." She starts to turn around towards the lift. Kevlan grasps your shoulder gently, and shhhs. "Honey, you cain't cut nothin' till you git your cutter redone, and you need that jaw looked at, too. C'mon, now." He nudges you lightly towards the Infirmary. "C'mon with me." You walk into the clinic of the infirmary. Bernadette walks softly from the lift area. Bernadette protests, "But..." Kevlan stays right by your side, and says gently, "You don't wanna git blood all over your cutter and stuff, do yah?" Bernadette pulls a bit, giving some resistance. Bernadette looks at her cutter and mutters "It's already bloody." Kevlan says softly, guiding you to a seat, "We'll git it all cleaned up after we git you cleaned up, too. You sit down right here, now, an' Ah'll find you a medic, 'kay?" Bernadette frowns but sits down. Kevlan pauses by you. "You gon' be alright, if Ah go off jes' a little?" Bernadette raises her eyes to Kevlan and gives a brief nod. She eyes the doorway. Kevlan follows your gaze and clasps your unwounded hand. "Look at me, honey... " Bernadette jumps a little and looks at Kevlan. You say "Promise me you gonna sit right here. You cain't go yet. Promise me?" Kevlan faces you with a solemn, earnest gaze - and those very blue eyes. Bernadette blinkblinks at Kevlan and mutters "I promise." Kevlan smiles warmly, and gives your hand another assuring clasp. "That's a good girl. You c'n git fixed up in here an' you'll feel right better... " With that, he lets your hand go, and surveys the Infirmary, judging the bustle of activity that swirls back and forth... Kevlan smiles in sudden relief as a passing orderly gets the attention of Morgan... Bernadette blinks. Bernadette tugs at Kevlan's hand with her undamaged one. "Kevlan...I have to go..." Morgan turns, spotting the waiting Singers, and smiles amiably at the two young people. "What's this, now? Galahad, are you hurt _again_?" Bernadette stands up. Kevlan looks between Berni and the medic as Morgan walks over, and tells Morgan, "No ma'am, Ah ain't hurt. C'n you he'p Berni? - Berni, honey, now hang on there, you promised me...!" Bernadette blinks at Kevlan and plops back down into the seat, rather like a dejected child. Morgan's eyebrows raise at Kevlan's manner of addressing his companion. But she comes over, medikit in hand, and she smiles gently at Bernadette. "So I see. Young lady, can you tell me what the problem is?" As she speaks, she hauls out a small diagnostic scanner. Bernadette blinks at Morgan and says "Well, my jaw hurts...so does my eye...and I seem to have misplaced a few of my fingers..." She looks around the floor. Morgan nods briskly, moving the scanner slowly about Bernadette's delicate face. "I see... yes, my dear, that jaw is certainly requiring attention... Singer Sharr, thank you for escorting her here." Bernadette mutters "Elissa hit me...she broke it." Kevlan nods earnestly. "Ah felt it proper, ma'am... " He frowns worriedly at Bernadette as she mumbles about Elissa. Morgan gives a brisk nod, completing her diagnosis; she puts away the scanner, and faces Bernadette. "Singer, can you walk? We need to get you into treatment." Bernadette continues muttering "Gave me a black eye, too, but not before I broke her cheek and dislocated her shoulder..." Bernadette looks up at Morgan. "Sure, I can walk." Morgan nods briskly, and says, "Alright then, come with me." She puts the medikit into a pocket of her lab coat, and offers you an arm for support. Kevlan looks between Bernadette and Morgan and blurts, "You gonna hafta keep her here a while, ma'am?" Bernadette blinks and looks at Kevlan as he speaks. Morgan nods quietly to Kevlan, and moves to assist the younger woman to her feet. Bernadette looks at Morgan and says, a tinge of hysteria to her voice, "But...I have to go...!" Bernadette looks at Kevlan pleadingly. Kevlan murmurs gently to Bernadette, "C'mon on, honey, she's gonna he'p you feel better... c'mon... " He returns to Bernadette's other side, clasping her unwounded hand again. Morgan says softly to Kevlan, "Under the circumstances, Singer, perhaps it is best you accompany her, if you can help me by keeping her calm?" Kevlan flashes Morgan a wide-eyed earnest glance and nods readily, then says to Bernadette, "Hon, c'mon now, Ah'll be right here th' whole time.... " Bernadette looks between Morgan and Kevlan and stands up with a sigh. Morgan nods approvingly, and between her and Kevlan, they get the other Singer standing once more. "Let's get her into prep, Singer. Right this way... " Morgan heads toward the lift area. Kevlan helps you along... [Morgan and Kevlan see Bernadette into the surgery suite.] Morgan, as the two Singers follow her in, instructs Kevlan briskly, "Now then, if you will escort her into the prep room... " You say "Yes ma'am. C'mon Berni, come this way..." You push the swinging doors open and enter the prep room. Bernadette and Morgan push through the swinging door separating the prep room from the surgery hallway. Bernadette peers at Morgan. "What're you going to do?" She pulls back a bit. Morgan nods quietly, looking both the Singers over. "All right." She goes to one of the racks, selecting a light green, loose garment. "Right now," she tells Bernadette assuringly, "I am going to ask you to put this on. Singer Sharr, if you will please go to the scrub room and sterilize your hands?" You say "Oh...! Yes ma'am!" Kevlan, blushing, ducks hastily out of the room. Bernadette wrinkles her nose and mutters "Green isn't my color..." [Kevlan waits anxiously outside after scrubbing up as Morgan instructs him, till Bernadette is wheeled out on a gurney.] Kevlan, looking rather wide-eyed and earnest, like a little boy at school, stands nearby. He's gotten a green surgical mask from somewhere and has gingerly tied it into place, and has tugged surgical gloves onto his hands. Bernadette looks over at Kevlan and seems visibly relieved. Morgan smiles approvingly at the young Singer, and vanishes briefly into the scrub room herself. When she returns, she is similarly attired, but also with a surgical gown protecting her lab coat. She murmurs to Bernadette, "See? Just as I said." Kevlan ventures to the gurney's other side, hoping to assure with his presence, but clearly nervous in the middle of a surgery room. Morgan flips on the viewing monitor above her patient, and tells Bernadette, "Dear, I'm going to sedate you, first of all, because the surgery I'll be doing on your jaw will be rather delicate. I can put you under completely, or give you a local; which do you prefer?" Bernadette mumbles "Local..." Morgan nods briskly, and produces a hypo, which she applies so that the entire lower half of the wounded Singer's face is numbed. "Now, dear," she goes on, her voice slightly muffled by the surgical mask, "you're not going to be able to talk, but focus on the sound of my voice. I'm going to immobilize your jaw, and then we'll determine the extent of the damage, whether we'll have to wire it closed, or use a pin. Tap your undamaged hand for me, if you understand." Kevlan, on the right side of the gurney, glances down at Bernadette's fingers... Bernadette blinks at Morgan and taps her fingers. Kevlan smiles. "That'sa girl," he murmurs. Bernadette shifts her eyes to Kevlan and turns her hand over, fingers spread and holds it out towards him. Morgan nods forthrightly. She brings forth a rather odd-looking but sturdy brace which she puts into place round Bernadette's head and neck, preventing movement of the head while allowing access to the jaw at the same time. Kevlan takes the hand, holding it firmly. "Ah'm right here, honey, Ah'm right here... " Bernadette grasps his hand, surprisingly tightly, and taps her fingers against it. Morgan goes to work, running a tiny sensitive scanner along the jawline, and eyeing the readout on the monitor overhead, judging the extent of the damage to the bone... Bernadette shifts her eyes back to Morgan, staring at the medic. The monitor indicates a clean fracture between the right joint of her jaw and her chin. Scar tissues has already begun to form due to the delay between the injury and having it attended to. Upon closer scrutiny, the fracture appears to be vertical, nearly separating the joint of her jaw from the rest of the bone. Morgan frowns softly, noting on the one hand Bernadette's symbiont's attempting to already heal the injury, but on the other noticing the slight dislocation of the pieces of bone. Bernadette blinks rapidly a few times and looks at Kevlan. Kevlan glances at the monitor, himself. He doesn't quite understand what he's looking at, but he notes the slight crinkling of Morgan's eyes, and realizes this will be a little difficult. Bernadette raises her eyes to look at the monitor everyone else seems so fascinated with. Morgan then faces both the Singers. "There's already some scarring, but Bernadette's symbiont can't quite cleanly mesh the fractured bones. This will be rather delicate work, indeed... " Bernadette grunts. Morgan continues, "The fracture is clean - so I believe I will be able to mesh the bones together, but your jaw will hurt for a few days afterwards. I'll have to attend to this scarring, first." She tells Bernadette, "This will itch, but focus on the sound of my voice, and on Kevlan's hand." Bernadette wriggles her fingers in Kevlan's hand to indicate she understands. Kevlan smiles behind the mask; over it, his blue eyes lighten a little. Bernadette blinkblinks and looks intently at Kevlan, attempting to concentrate per Morgan's instructions. Her gaze seems to drift now and then, but she manages to bring it back into view. Morgan flips on the laser scalpel, and swings it into place. Seeing Kevlan still position on the right side of the gurney, Morgan positions both scalpel and monitor so that she can keep keen watch on her work and yet not displace the Singer. Kevlan holds Bernadette's hand evenly. Bernadette blinkblinks again and flinches a bit as she hears the laser scalpel power up. Bernadette tightens her grip on Kevlan's hand. Delicately, the thin pale laser light makes a clean incision along the jawk, so that Morgan can get past the slight scarring. Her eyes keeping careful watch on the instruments, the meditech then penetrates to the fracture itself, while making a minute adjustment to the brace so that the bones are properly aligned. Kevlan holds Bernadette's fingers clasped in both his hands, murmuring assurances to her, even humming a bit, but trying to keep his voice down so as not to disturb the medic at her work. Bernadette blinks and squints at Kevlan, trying to concentrate and having difficulty. Moments pass... and at last, Morgan shuts off the scalpel, moving to another tool designed to fuse bone and flesh. With the scar tissue cleared, she sets the instrument to close the fracture, adjusting it tiny amounts at a time to guide the narrow beam along. Bernadette takes a deep breath and sighs. Morgan adjusts the setting again, and the beam lessens in intensity, now closing the incision along the flesh. Bernadette wrinkles her nose. Kevlan says assuringly, "Almost there, hon... " At last, the incision is closed, and Morgan smiles, flipping off the beam and swinging the instrument away. Bernadette blinks at Kevlan and squeezes his hand. Bernadette looks to Morgan, expectantly. Morgan smiles down to the young woman. "That is that, then; now, your jaw is still going to be sore for a few days, and you're going to want to not sing until the soreness is gone, or else you'll risk having to come see me again. Now, I'm going to look at that hand of yours." Morgan unwraps the makeshift bandage about the damaged hand, swinging round the diagnostic viewer once more to get a close look at the extent of the damage, and how the symbiont has already attended to it. The monitor displays the nubby stumps of three fingers on her left hand: index, middle and ring, leaving her pinky and thumb intact. The amputation appears to have been clean, neatly slicing off the digits. A line across the bottom of the monitor blinks "No infection detected." Morgan nods approvingly, as she cleans the caked blood from the hand. At each stump, there is a brief 'itch' as she uses the scanner to test nerve reactions, and she nods again as each test reports back that the nerves are regenerating normally. "Very good. You do not have nearly the difficulty that another Singer had today... " Bernadette peers down over th brace to watch Morgan attending to her hand. Kevlan smiles down to Bernadette, though only his eyes are visible. "You're doin' real good, honey... " Bernadette swings her eyes up to look at Kevlan. She squeezes his hand again since she can't smile since her face is numb. Morgan, satisfied that the fingers will not be long in regenerating, swings round a small tray with clean bandages and a sterilized pair of scissors on it. Snipping a length of the wrapping free, she swaths the hand, while telling Bernadette, "These will be very sensitive for a few days, thus I am bandaging them to provide some padding. You will probably experience itching as the fingers return to their proper length." Bernadette wiggles her fingers between Kevlan's hands. Kevlan grins and clasps the hand tightly. Morgan swings that tray out of the way, then, and comes back up to remove the brace from Bernadette's head. She takes the diagnostic scanner down to inspect the regenerated foot, and nods in approval at her findings; finally, she comes once more to the head of the gurney, and tells the wounded Singer, "I am going to let the symbiont finish off healing that bruise of yours, but I will prescribe a salve for you to use that'll help it along. It should clear up by tomorrow; it's already gotten smaller in the time you've been in here." Bernadette makes a humming noise in acknowledgement. Morgan shuts down her various scanners, returns the loose tools to their proper places, and smiles down at her patient. "You're all done, now; that anesthetic will clear out of your system shortly, but if you wish, I can give you a stimulant to clear your head?" Bernadette shakes her head a bit and slurs "No stimulant." Morgan nods serenely, and reaches up to untie her surgical mask so that her smile shows clearly. "Well, then, I recommend you get a good night's sleep, and don't forget to ask on the way out for that salve I mentioned." Bernadette uses her bandaged hand to push herself up into a sitting position, her good hand still enveloped by Kevlan's hands. You say "Ah'll remind 'er, ma'am..." Kevlan oofs a little, and moves to help assist Bernadette to a sitting position. Bernadette nods at Morgan. "Okay." Her words come out slurred. Morgan smiles. "Singer Sharr was kind enough to escort you here; you might rely on his good strong arm to get you to your own quarters. That way I won't have to send you there on a gurney." Bernadette smiles a bit. "He's right down the hall from me." Bernadette looks at Kevlan. Kevlan blushes a little, smiling sheepishly as he pulls off the surgical mask and gloves he'd been wearing. "Ah'll git 'er back, ma'am," he promises, as he offers the protective gear to the medic. Bernadette looks back to Morgan. "Thank you," she says earnestly. Morgan nods sagely, collecting the offered items, and she gives Bernadette a warm smile. "It's my job, my dear. Take care, now." Bernadette swings her legs over the edge of the gurney and smiles at the medic. Kevlan ventures to Bernadette, "C'mon on, hon, there you go... you c'mon in here and git your clothes on, Ah'll wait right here... " He helps you towards the prep room. Bernadette hops off the gurney with Kevlan's assistance and takes her clothes. She toddles into the prep room to get changed. Bernadette re-emerges fully clothed. Kevlan smiles brightly to the medic himself, saying earnestly, "Thanks a whole lot, ma'am... you been real he'pful." As Bernadette returns, he goes solicitously to her side. Bernadette lifts her left hand in departing farewell to Morgan, lowers it hastily and waves with her good hand. Morgan inclines her head cheerfully as the Singers depart. [Kevlan helps Bernadette out back to the main portion of the Infirmary.] You say "How you feelin', hon? You did real good in there... c'mon now, let's git you that salve, 'kay?" Bernadette nods at Kevlan and follows him. [In the Infirmary, Kilanjth is present, awaiting a checkup on her own amputated fingers.] Kevlan brings Bernadette beside him into view, supporting her on one arm. Bernadette looks about groggily. Kevlan helps Bernadette towards the front desk; he smiles shyly at Kilanjth as they pass, and then informs the tech on duty, "Miz Morgan said we should ask 'bout a salve for Berni's face.... " Bernadette waves her bandaged hand at Kilanjth in greeting. She follows Kevlan. Kilanjth nods, watching you two. The tech nods politely and vanishes back into a storage area; re-emerging a few moments later with a small tube, he presents this to Bernadette. "Apply this in small dabs on the affected areas, every eight hours or until you heal, whichever comes first." Kevlan smiles his thanks, as the tech nods back cheerfully; then, Kevlan looks Bernadette up and down. "Let's git you back so you c'n lay down." Bernadette nods at Kevlan mutely. Bernadette grasps Kevlan's hand with her good hand. Kilanjth just watches silently, no expression really apparent on her face. Kevlan adds, belatedly realizing that Kilanjth is watching, "She got her busted jaw fixed. She did real good in surg'ry!" He looks proud about this, and as if he's helping a wounded puppy along, carefully helps the other Singer out towards the lift. You enter the center of the infirmary. Bernadette steps out of the bustling infirmary. Kevlan looks pleased to see a lift waiting, and guides you to it. "You'll feel better in no time, promise." You step onto the lift. Bernadette steps into the lift after the doors *whoosh* open. The lift doors slide shut and you feel the slight *pop* of air pressure changes. A soft chime sounds and a computer-generated voice announces: "Tenth Level (Singer Level: Violet and Green Quadrants)." The doors *whoosh* open. Bernadette leans against Kevlan's shouder. Kevlan's eyes soften a little, unknowingly; as the lift chimes, he nudges you gently. "We're there, hon, C'mon, now." At your destination, you step off the quiet lift. Bernadette emerges from the efficient lift. You walk down the hallway. Bernadette enters from the lift area. Bernadette blinks and says "Here it is." Bernadette wipes at her mouth. Kevlan pauses near your door, and looks earnestly down at you. "You did good, keepin' your promise for me, honey." Bernadette looks up at Kevlan and puts her good hand to his cheek. "Thank you" she says simply. Kevlan's gaze has gentled; he smiles a little down at you, blushing slightly. But he answers readily, "You're right welcome." Bernadette smiles and pulls her hand back. She wanders into her suite, looking over her shoulder once. Kevlan promises, "You'll git that order filled, jes' wait 'n' see!" Kevlan smiles after you, evidently quite intent on returning the favor of escorting you to your door, as you'd done for him a few days before. Bernadette thumbs her door open and turns around. "If I can't sing...I can't cut." Bernadette sighs. Bernadette puts her hand to her jaw, feeling the newly fused bones beneath her fingers. Kevlan says hopefully, "It won't be all that long, hon... " He pauses, and tells you gently, "If Ah thought it'd make yah feel better, Ah'd go cut it for yah. But it's your crystal, hon; it'll wait for yah." Bernadette squints her eyes a bit, peering thoughtfully at Kevlan for a moment. Then she smiles and says "Thanks again. I better go lie down." Bernadette blinks and steps out of her doorway closer to Kevlan, stands on tiptoes and drops a little kiss on his cheek. "I appreciate your concern," she says and smiles, retreating to her suite. Bernadette steps inside the door leading to Bernadette's rooms. Kevlan stands, stunned, in the corridor a moment as Bernadette vanishes; then, looking wondering, he disappears into his own room.
